What is honor? What is shame?
January 22 marks the anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision. A decision
that has defined the essence of the United States culture for over 30 years.
What is this essence, this bedrock foundation upon which our culture is
built? It is personal license and regard for no one but self.
In the past, honor has been reserved for those who made personal
sacrifices for the good of others, both for the living and for future
generations. Veterans placed their lives on the line to preserve our
nation for their families and their descendants. They deserve honor.
Parents work and sacrifice so that their children may have a chance at an
education and a better life. Teachers work at a difficult job for the love
of their students and the hope that they will make a positive difference
in young lives. These deserve honor.
As a nation have we now fallen to such a base level that some suggest that
we should "honor" an unfortunate young woman who elects to have sexual
relations outside marriage, then quickly rushes off to eliminate any
fertilized egg that may have ensued. They suggest that we "honor"
adolescents who use a porous film of latex in a feeble attempt to avoid
deadly diseases and pregnancy while they do what should not be done. These
things are not honorable, they are shameful.
The shame of our nation is that many of our citizens care more about
themselves than they do about their offspring and are only too ready to
sacrifice the next generation for their own present convenience. Whatever
your view of Roe vs. Wade, the fact is that 40 million citizens under the
age of 30 do not exist today because of that court ruling and that is a
national tragedy, not an honor.
Let us honor humility and personal sacrifice, not shameful reckless
behavior and self-indulgence.
